Casinos are illegal in India but through Portuguese hangover laws, they are welcome in Goa as long as they are not on land. So now, in Goa, the middle of a river is considered ‘offshore’. These eyesores are emblems of the current government, selling common land for quick bucks, betting on a single Dreamworld at the cost of many. I made this show during the Planetary Poetics masters program at Sandberg Institute. The scene was a reflection on the coast of Noord Holland, once known as the Geestlanden or Spirit lands, was seen as infertile before peat and soil was brought from inland to prepare beds for the propagation of bulbs. The performance was a reflection on the colonial notion of a landscape being ‘infertile’ and how this notion was used to build the Dutch coast before being exported to the colonies. This is part of ongoing research into coaslines and their industrial, colonial and socio-ecological histories. Water witching, doodlebugging or wichelroede lopen in Dutch, is a method of looking for underground water or mineral sources using a forked twig or two L shaped copper rods. This practice was made popular in the 16th century by the mining industry in Germany. During my stay in Beetsterzwaag, I spoke to neighbours about their relationships with water witching. Through these conversations I learned about the frogs, storks, water bodies and peatlands around the town. The film Je droomt ook van jezelf als een schepsel van het moeras,&nbsp;based on these conversations, is about the joys and tensions between knowing closely and grieving bodies of water. The installation reflected on the movement of raw materials in a landscape and the separation of ‘pure’ and waste material. They’ve been writing postcards about the things theyve witnessed. About their past lives as birds, about the gas beneath the Wadden Zee. They write to the guy in the suit at the Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschapij who is on holiday to ask him whether he has found inner peace. They write about a lettuce choir and about a Great Sacrifice.&nbsp; These postcards were exhibited alongside the memories of the giants resting at the Herenplein.&nbsp;The work was on view at the Tschumi Pavilion in Groningen in the summer of 2023. Water that feeds the Jamun trees, the Bison and the Rasbora, trickles into the acidic stomach of the mine, only to be pumped out again. Further down the production line, the iron ore is bathed in water and sent off on its journey down the Mandovi river. The same river that the Portuguese colonizers sailed up 450 years ago and drew the first mining leases.&nbsp; The installation, an ode to the beings and the water affected by iron ore mining in Goa, was part of the project ‘In the Courtroom with Rocks’, created together with Marina Sulima. She worries about the future of her daughter and her farm in a time where the local government favours quick bucks over ancient ecosystems. In a dream she finds herself back at the mining pit where she meets three figures, the future generations, who break some bad news. This farm, like many others in the province of Groningen, has been damaged by earthquakes, caused by decades of gas mining. While filming the animals, I noticed one inquisitive guineafowl was keeping an eye on me and Niels, the goose, shimmied and screeched at me regularly. They reminded me that I am also a predator and an intruder along with an artist, human etc. I was invited by Museum Villa Mondriaan to respond to one of Piet Mondriaan’s early paintings, Boerderij 1895. The participants and their parents transformed into our beloved city birds, the ooievaar, duif, meerkoet, and eend, among others. They were invited to interview each other about life in the city.
